Dukoral in Canada: Complete Guide — Cost, Dosing, Side Effects & Who Needs It

June 13, 20268 min read

What is Dukoral?

Dukoral is an oral vaccine licensed in Canada that protects against two gut infections: cholera (Vibrio cholerae) and traveller's diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). It is swallowed as a drink — a sachet dissolved in water — not injected.

This makes it unique in the Canadian travel medicine toolkit and often surprising to travellers encountering it for the first time at a pre-travel consultation.

What does Dukoral protect against?

Dukoral provides two types of protection:

  • Cholera: Approximately 85–90% protection for up to 2 years. While cholera risk for most Canadian travellers is low, the vaccine's cholera protection provides valuable cross-protection against a far more common illness.
  • Traveller's diarrhea (ETEC): Through cross-protection against ETEC toxin, Dukoral reduces the risk of ETEC-caused traveller's diarrhea by approximately 60–70%. ETEC causes 30–70% of all traveller's diarrhea cases worldwide.

How much does Dukoral cost in Canada?

Dukoral typically costs $90–$130 per dose at Canadian travel clinics and pharmacies. Adults require 2 doses, so the full course costs approximately $180–$260 for the vaccine alone, not including the physician consultation.

Many extended health benefit plans cover Dukoral. We provide official itemized receipts for all services. Dukoral is not covered by OHIP or any provincial health plan.

How is Dukoral taken?

Each dose: dissolve the sachet of granules in 150 mL of cold, clean water. Drink the entire mixture on an empty stomach. Do not eat or drink for 1 hour before and after each dose.

Adults take 2 doses spaced 1–6 weeks apart. The final dose must be at least 1 week before travel to allow full immunity to develop.

How long does protection last?

  • Cholera: up to 2 years
  • ETEC (traveller's diarrhea): approximately 3 months

For trips within 3 months: no booster needed. For extended trips beyond 3 months: a single booster extends protection for another 3 months.

Dukoral vs antibiotics — which is better?

These serve different purposes and work best together:

  • Dukoral is taken before travel to prevent ETEC infection
  • Standby antibiotics (azithromycin, ciprofloxacin) are taken after symptoms begin, to shorten illness duration

For maximum protection: take Dukoral before travel AND carry a physician-prescribed standby antibiotic. These complement each other.

Yes — Dukoral is one of the most commonly prescribed travel vaccines for Mexico (Cancun, Los Cabos, Riviera Maya), Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica. ETEC is a major cause of traveller's diarrhea in these destinations, and the protection from Dukoral is meaningful even for resort travellers who are careful about food and water.

Yes — Dukoral is highly recommended for India travel. India has one of the world's highest rates of traveller's diarrhea, and ETEC — which Dukoral specifically targets — is a major cause. Combined with food and water precautions and a standby antibiotic, Dukoral is part of the standard India pre-travel prescription.

Important: Dukoral and oral typhoid vaccine

Do not take Dukoral within 8 hours of the oral typhoid vaccine (Vivotif). Injectable typhoid vaccine (Typhim Vi or Typherix) can be given the same day as Dukoral without issue. Our physician coordinates timing at your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Does Dukoral work if I'm careful about food and water?

Yes — even careful travellers benefit from Dukoral. ETEC can contaminate food that looks clean and surfaces that appear hygienic. Dukoral provides a safety net for the unavoidable exposures that happen during travel regardless of how vigilant you are. It does not replace food and water precautions — it complements them.

Is Dukoral safe in pregnancy?

Dukoral is generally considered safe in pregnancy based on available data. As with all medical decisions during pregnancy, discuss with our physician at your consultation.
