Travel Vaccines for Colombia — Medellín, Cartagena & Amazon Prep for Canadians

June 29, 20267 min read

Colombia — two distinct health profiles

Colombia is a country with remarkable diversity — from the modern, temperate city of Medellín (1,500 m altitude) to the Caribbean coast of Cartagena to the Amazon basin near Leticia. Each requires different health preparation.

Urban and coastal Colombia

Medellín, Bogotá, Cartagena, Coffee Region (Eje Cafetero)

For these popular destinations:

  • Hepatitis A: All travellers
  • Typhoid: Recommended for eating local food
  • Dukoral: Recommended
  • No malaria pills for Medellín, Bogotá, or Cartagena
  • No Yellow Fever vaccine for coastal or high-altitude urban Colombia (unless extending to Amazon)

Medellín sits at 1,500 m — temperate climate, lower dengue risk than coastal areas. Still popular for digital nomads and long-stay travellers.

Dengue: Present in Cartagena and coastal lowlands — DEET repellent daily.

Zika: Present in Colombia below 2,200 m — pregnant travellers should consult our physician before planning any Colombia travel.

Amazon Colombia — Leticia and jungle tours

Amazon Colombia requires:

  • Yellow Fever: Required for the Colombian Amazon — vaccination is essential. Some jungle lodges verify ICVP certificates.
  • Malaria prophylaxis: Required for Leticia, Amazon river tours, and jungle lodges near the Brazilian/Peruvian border.

Entry requirements

Colombia does not require Yellow Fever vaccination from Canadian travellers (Canada is not endemic). However, the vaccine is required if you are entering from Brazil, Peru, or other endemic countries. And it is strongly recommended for Amazon Colombia regardless of entry requirements.
