Travel Vaccines for the Philippines — What Canadians Need for Manila, Boracay & Palawan (2026)

Philippines — two health issues most Canadians miss

Most Canadians planning a Philippines trip focus on the beaches — Boracay, El Nido, Coron, Siargao. The beach experience is phenomenal. But two health issues catch travellers off guard:

  1. Palawan malaria — El Nido and Coron are in malaria-risk areas
  2. Stray dog rabies — endemic on every island; pre-vaccination is critical

Rabies — why pre-exposure vaccination is essential

The Philippines has one of Asia's highest rates of human rabies deaths. Stray dogs roam beaches, towns, and trekking paths across all islands. Even at beach resorts, contact with stray animals is common.

Pre-exposure rabies vaccination (2 doses) transforms any post-bite situation from a potential immunoglobulin emergency into a simple 2-dose booster. Rabies immunoglobulin can be difficult to source in remote Philippine provinces. Pre-vaccination eliminates this risk entirely.

Dengue fever in the Philippines

Dengue is endemic year-round across all Philippine islands. No travel vaccine is available. Essential prevention: 30% DEET repellent morning and evening, wear long sleeves at dawn/dusk, stay in screened accommodation.
