Thailand preparation: it depends on your itinerary
Thailand health preparation varies significantly based on where you're going. Bangkok city, Phuket, Koh Samui, and Chiang Mai city require fewer vaccines than rural trekking, border regions, or extended stays. Here's what Canadian travellers need for the most common Thailand itineraries.
Vaccines recommended for all Thailand travellers
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for all Thailand travellers, regardless of whether you're staying at a 5-star resort or backpacking. Contaminated food and water exposure can occur even in higher-end restaurants.
Typhoid
Typhoid vaccine is recommended for all travellers eating outside the immediate hotel compound — which includes virtually every Thailand visitor. If you eat at local restaurants, street food, or excursion meals, typhoid vaccination is worthwhile.
Dukoral
Dukoral is recommended for Thailand — ETEC is a significant cause of traveller's diarrhea. Take 2 doses before departure, finishing at least 1 week before travel.
Do I need malaria pills for Thailand?
For Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, Chiang Mai city: No — these are not malaria-risk areas. Standard tourist itineraries in Thai cities and beach resorts do NOT require malaria prophylaxis.
For rural trekking near Thai-Myanmar border (Mae Sai, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai border area) or Thai-Cambodia border: Yes — malaria prophylaxis is recommended. These forested border regions have ongoing transmission.
Additional vaccines for extended or rural travel
- Rabies pre-exposure: Recommended for trips longer than 1 month, rural trekking, or animal contact. See Rabies vaccine page.
- Japanese Encephalitis: Recommended for extended travel (>1 month) in rural rice-farming areas, particularly during monsoon (May–October). Not needed for city/resort travel.
- Hepatitis B: Recommended if unvaccinated — universal for all travellers.
Dengue fever — no vaccine, mosquito prevention essential
Dengue is widespread across Thailand including urban areas. There is no travel vaccine. Prevention: 30% DEET repellent daily (dengue mosquitoes bite day and night), long sleeves at dawn and dusk, and staying in air-conditioned or screened accommodation.
