The Vietnam travel health question most Canadians ask first
"Do I need malaria pills for Vietnam?" is the most common question from Canada-Vietnam travellers. The answer depends entirely on where you're going.
Malaria in Vietnam — city vs. rural
| Destination | Malaria Risk | Prophylaxis? |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi | None | No |
| Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) | None | No |
| Ha Long Bay | None | No |
| Hoi An, Da Nang | None | No |
| Phu Quoc Island | None | No |
| Hue, Nha Trang | None/Very low | Generally No |
| Remote highland provinces near Cambodian border | Present | Yes — consult physician |
Standard Vietnam tourist itineraries — Hanoi, Ha Long, Hoi An, HCMC, Phu Quoc — do NOT require malaria prophylaxis.
Vaccines recommended for all Vietnam travellers
- Hepatitis A: Essential — contaminated food and water throughout Vietnam
- Typhoid: Strongly recommended — Vietnam has high typhoid prevalence, especially in street food settings
- Dukoral: Recommended for ETEC protection — street food is a highlight of Vietnam travel but increases GI risk
Dengue fever
Dengue is endemic year-round in Vietnam. No travel vaccine exists. DEET repellent morning and evening is essential — dengue mosquitoes (Aedes) bite during daylight hours, different from malaria mosquitoes.
Rabies for extended or rural travel
For stays longer than 1 month or significant rural/village travel, Rabies pre-exposure vaccination is recommended. Stray dog contact is common in Vietnamese towns and villages.
