Recommended vaccines for Saudi Arabia

Required for entry

  • Meningococcal ACWY (legally required for Hajj and Umrah visas)
  • Meningococcal ACWY
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Typhoid (for extended or non-luxury travel)
  • Influenza (Hajj/Umrah crowds)

Malaria risk & prevention

No malaria risk in Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca, or Medina. Very focal malaria risk in remote south-western border areas near Yemen — not applicable to typical pilgrim or tourist itineraries.

Key health considerations

  • 1Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages involve extreme crowd density — respiratory illness (including MERS-CoV, influenza, and meningitis) risk is significantly elevated.
  • 2Extreme heat — temperatures in Mecca exceed 45°C in summer. Heat stroke is a leading cause of pilgrim illness and death.
  • 3MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) is endemic in the region; hand hygiene and mask use are advisable in crowded settings.
  • 4Dehydration during outdoor religious observances.

Travel-health tips

  • Book your consultation well in advance of your visa application — the meningitis vaccine certificate must be presented with your Hajj/Umrah visa paperwork.
  • Carry a personal water bottle; hydrate aggressively throughout Hajj rites.
  • Bring all personal medications with a physician letter — some medications are restricted in Saudi Arabia.
  • Influenza vaccination is strongly recommended given the mass gathering context of Hajj.

Frequently asked: Saudi Arabia

Do I need the meningitis vaccine for Hajj or Umrah?

Yes — a valid Meningococcal ACWY vaccination certificate is a legal requirement for the Hajj and Umrah visa. The certificate must be issued at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia and typically must have been given within the last 3–5 years. The Virtual Travel Clinic administers the vaccine and provides official documentation for your visa application.

Which meningitis vaccine is accepted for the Saudi Hajj visa?

The quadrivalent conjugate vaccines (Menveo, Nimenrix, Menactra) all meet the Saudi Arabia visa requirement. Single-valent (A or C only) vaccines are not accepted. Our physician will ensure you receive the correct vaccine and documentation.

What other vaccines should I get before Hajj?

In addition to the required meningococcal vaccine, we recommend influenza (given the mass-gathering environment), Hepatitis A, and ensuring routine vaccines (MMR, Tdap) are up to date. Our physician will create a full pre-Hajj vaccine plan at your consultation.

How far in advance should I book before Hajj or Umrah?

We recommend at least 4–6 weeks before your visa application date. The meningitis certificate must be issued at least 10 days before entry to Saudi Arabia. Book early to ensure your documentation is ready in time.
