Going to Hajj in 2027? 4 health steps before you fly

  1. Meningococcal vaccine, 10+ days ahead

Saudi Arabia requires every pilgrim, from every country, to have a meningococcal vaccine covering serogroups A, C, W and Y before travelling. Under the 1447 AH rules, a conjugate vaccine counts for 5 years and a polysaccharide vaccine for 3 years, and either must be given at least 10 days before you arrive.

  2. Bring a record that names the vaccine

Your vaccination record must show the vaccine's name and the date it was given. If the record does not show the type of vaccine, Saudi Arabia counts the dose as valid for 3 years only.

  3. Get this season's flu shot

  4. Plan for the heat and your medicines

Saudi Arabia advises pilgrims, especially older pilgrims, to avoid direct sun during the rituals and to drink enough fluids. Medicines that can worsen dehydration, such as water pills (diuretics), may need adjusting by your doctor. If you have a chronic condition, carry enough medicine in its original packaging and a document describing your condition.

Conditions that rule out Hajj

Saudi Arabia's 1447 AH rules ask each country to declare that its pilgrims are free of conditions that stop someone completing the rituals. The list includes kidney failure needing dialysis, heart failure with symptoms on minimal effort, chronic lung disease needing oxygen, liver cirrhosis with signs of liver failure, severe neurological or psychiatric conditions that impair thinking, dementia, the last three months of pregnancy or a high-risk pregnancy, active infections such as open pulmonary tuberculosis, and active cancer on treatment that severely suppresses the immune system.

If any of these applies to you, talk to your own doctor before you register.

Polio, yellow fever and COVID-19

Under the 1447 AH rules, proof of polio vaccination is required from people arriving from certain countries, including Afghanistan and Pakistan, and proof of yellow fever vaccination from anyone over 9 months old arriving from listed countries in Africa and South America. Canada is on neither list. Canada's advice adds that the yellow fever rule also applies if you transit through an airport in a country where yellow fever occurs, so tell your physician about every stop on your route.

The same rules set a COVID-19 vaccination requirement for some pilgrims. Check whether it applies to you in the 1448 AH (2027) rules on the Nusuk Hajj platform.

The Virtual Travel Clinic does not give the yellow fever vaccine; only Government of Canada designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres do.
